Windows 8 installation with a Motherboard ASUS P5AD2-E Premium

Hi folks,

One of my home PC’s is +8 years old and has the Motherboard ASUS P5AD2-E Premium integrated, at the time I bought it was the state of the art from ASUS, however it’s a shame that they never took into consideration the complaints of thousands of their customers begging for Windows 7 drivers, obviously I’ll never expect Windows 8 drivers and here I go again…

Back into 2009 I’ve published in my blog the guide for Windows 7 and C-Media CMI 9880 driver installation and Windows 7 setup and Sata Raid Controller ITE 8212 driver installation, I couldn’t even imagine the positive impact that these posts would represent by solving lots of headhaches to many people around the globe, they are now referenced in many Tech forums including Asus and once more this post is for all of you.

Solving the drivers issues for Windows 7 has brought a sustainable lifetime for such hardware and I want to extend this even further through a complete lifecycle of Windows 8 which is more reliable, has better performance, has wide range of new features, absolutely the best OS ever.

First let me share the current HW Specs:

Processor Pentium 4 Prescott 530 – 3,0Ghz 800Mhz FSB (no Intel EM64T)
Motherboard Asus P5AD2-E Premium (LGA 775)
Onboard Sound Card C-Media CMI9880
Onboard SATA1 Controller Silicon Image
Onboard ATA Raid Controller ITE 8212
1,5Gb Ram DDR2
1 SSD OCZ Agility 3 Sata 3 128Gb (*)
Graphic Card Nvidia Gforce 8800GT 512Mb

(*) The SATA3 SSD HDD is strangled to the Motherboard SATA1 bandwidth, either way the performance increase is so huge that makes me feel that I am running Windows 8 on brand new hardware, I strongly recommend you to invest on a SSD as a primary HDD.

[Windows 8 pre-install considerations]

  • IMPORTANT NOTE: Windows 8 requires a CPU that supports the NX (No eXecute bit) for AMD CPU’s or XD (eXecute Disabled) for Intel CPU’s and this must be set on your Motherboard BIOS settings in case your CPU support’s it. The MotherBoard P5AD2-E Premium supports the Intel architecture and you have to enable the XD (eXecute Disable) feature on the BIOS Settings, you might get confused with this MotherBoard BIOS settings because you will have to Disable the option “Execute Disable Function” (Setting explanation: No-Execution Page Protection Technology – disable to force the XD feature flag to always) to force the XD feature to be on.
  • Make sure you are running the latest BIOS version (beta 1006.006) on your Motherboard;
  • To verify/modify the XD (eXecute Disable) feature on the Bios Settings, Press [DEL] Key during machine boot and define the following:
      • Advanced > Configure advanced CPU settings
        • Execute Disable Function: [Disable]
  • Installing Windows 8 with a MotherBoard ASUS P5AD2-E Premium believe it or not is much easier than on Windows 7;
  • Your primary HDD should be a SATA HDD;
    • Silicon Image SATA controller is detected during Windows 8 installation;
      • All attached SATA HDD’s and Drives will be detected during initial install;
    • ATA Controller ITE 8212 it’s not detected during Windows 8 installation;
      • All attached ATA HDD’s and Drives will not be detected during initial install (**);
  • Recommend you to install Windows 8 from a USB disk and not from a DVD;
    • DVD Drive attached to the ATA Controller ITE 8212 will not detected (**);
  • Do not use any driver or asus utility provided by the ASUS product download section!!! Those are not appropriate and you don’t need them at all, except the the latest BIOS;
  • The Motherboard Bios Settings for USB 2.0 Controller must be [Enabled] and the USB 2.0 mode should be set to [Hispeed].
    • The USB Controller modes can be Fullspeed (the default setting) with a speed of 12MBps and the HiSpeed with a speed of 480Mpbs.

To verify/modify the USB Bios Settings, Press [DEL] Key during machine boot and define the following:

      • Advanced > USB Configuration
        • Legacy USB Support: [Auto]
        • USB 2.0 Controller: [Enabled]
        • USB 2.0 Mode: [HiSpeed]  –> 480Mbps!!!!

(**) The driver for ATA Controller ITE 8212 controller should be installed after the Windows 8 installation is complete. Completing the steps described on the link below the ATA ITE 8212 should be recognized by Windows 8 and also all the attached ATA HDD’s and Drives will be then recognized.

[Windows 8 installation process]

1 – Make sure you have followed the above considerations;

2 – Download the Windows 8 ISO you want to install;

3 – Insert a clean USB Disk on your computer and ensure it’s recognized;

4 – Download the Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool and follow the steps on this link to prepare the USB Disk for Windows 8 setup;

5 – Attach the already prepared Windows 8 USB Disk to your PC with P5AD2-E Premium and and Boot your Machine from USB;

  • Restart the machine and during POST press the “F8” Key to activate the Boot Menu;
  • On the Boot menu options move the cursor to keep the USB drive selected and Press “Enter”;
  • When the Windows 8 Setup starts press any key of the keyboard to proceed with the boot setup (you have 2 or 3 seconds);

6 – Follow the Windows 8 Installation process until the OS Setup is complete;

7 – Configure the Driver of the Onboard ATA Raid Controller ITE 8212 by following this link “Windows 8 setup and ATA Controller ITE 8212 driver installation”;

8 – Configure the Driver of the Onboard Sound Card C-Media CMI9880 by following this link “Windows 8 and C-Media CMI 9880 driver installation”;

You are done so now enjoy Windows 8 on a computer with 8 years old MotherBoard. Sorriso

[UPDATED POST on 18/11/2012]
Following the feedback from some folks complaning that Windows 8 wouldn’t boot with the Error Code:  0x0000005D (CPU not supported), I’ve updated this post to reflect the required Bios settings. Please verify the IMPORTANT NOTE on the [Windows 8 Pre-install considerations].

    Please can help me?
    thanks in advance.

    • Thank you for the feedback and sorry for the delayed response, I’ve been out of Country and I didn’t had the opportunity to verify the reported issue.

      Based on the error code provided your CPU or BIOS settings are not supporting the Intel XD feature which is required by Windows 8.
      I believe that your problem should be arround the BIOS settings and not about your CPU, I’ve updated this post reflecting your feedback so please check the IMPORTANT NOTE on the [Windows 8 Pre-install considerations].

      Thanks,
      Luís Rato

  2. thanks! i don’t understand why my installation don’t work…because i have my hdd in ata! so i ‘ll connect a hdd in sata…

    • Thank you for the feedback and sorry for the delayed response, I’ve been out of Country and I didn’t had the opportunity to verify the reported issue.

      I’m not sure about what problem are you facing, if you can provide the error code or describe the issue I can look for it.

      Either way, some issues have been reported arround the CPU supportability (error code: 0x0000005D during initial boot), I’ve updated this post reflecting this particular feedback so please check the IMPORTANT NOTE on the [Windows 8 Pre-install considerations] and be sure you follow the described steps. 😉

      Thanks,

  3. it doesn’t work … but i have a P5ad2- premium not E-premium…
    usb is well set up in bios , i have a hdd in sata and a dvd-rom in sata
    at the beginning.. error code: please hold power button and pc shut down…
    i tried with usb and dvd boot..same pb
    please help me!!

    • Thank you for the feedback and sorry for the delayed response, I’ve been out of Country and I didn’t had the opportunity to verify the reported issue.

      Not sure if an error code is being displayed in your case, but you must be sure your BIOS has the Intel XD feature turned on, Windows 8 wouldn’t boot if it is disable.

      I’ve updated this post reflecting the required steps to enable the XD feature, for your Motherboard I believe that shouldn’t be so different from the Premium edition, please check the IMPORTANT NOTE on the [Windows 8 Pre-install considerations]. 😉

      Thanks,

  4. Hello Luis,

    I got the same motherboard and almost the same cpu.
    i think the options are equal.
    Did you got it running with that cpu, the 530?
    I got a 560 but the option doesn’t show in the bios (1006.006)

    THanx is advance.

  5. Hi Luis,

    I was wondering if you could ever get the wireless card on the P5AD2-E to work under any of the vista/7/8 64 bit OS’s?

    Regards

    Seb

    • Hi Seb,

      I’ve never used the Wireless adapter because it only supported a/b/g, so I was using a cheap USB Wireless “n” adapter. In the meantime I have some issues with this PC, not sure if it the CPU or Motherboard, so I am not able to test it right now. :/

      Cheers,
      Luís

  6. Hello Luis,

    I’ve a motherboard P5AD2 premium with latest firmware dated 2008, CPU Prescott 650 supporting 64 bit, bios setteled as mentioned, no pata devices installed but Windows 8.1 x64 does not run on installation . Is it possible that this hardware combination is not suitable for win 8.1? currently running with window 7 32 bit 2 gb ram

    waiting for your comment

    regards
    Mirko

  7. Hello Luis,

    finally I’ve successfully installed Windows 8.1 32 bit, with 2 gb ram it seems enough and it works very fine also thanks of your drivers downloaded and installed

    pc is workig with follow specification :

    – Processor Pentium 4 Prescott 650 – 3,4Ghz (running at 3.75 ghz) 800Mhz FSB
    – Motherboard Asus P5AD2 Premium (LGA 775)
    – Onboard Sound Card C-Media CMI9880
    – Onboard SATA1 Controller Silicon Image
    – Onboard ATA Raid Controller ITE 8212
    – 2 Gb Ram DDR2
    – Hd seagate 500 Gb sata 2
    – Grafic card Ati x700 128 Mb

    Office 2013

    thanks for your support

    Mirko

  8. Hello Luis

    Thanks for this nice page. I recycled my P5AD2 by installing win 8.1 (P4 650 3.4 GHz). I put a 32 bits OS because I think the advantage of 64 bit OS is only if RAM > 4 GB – I’m not sure you can put so much memory on this board. I run my system with 2x1GB + 2x512MB = 3GB.
    One drawback : Put 2 HDD as RAID1 storage attached to the SIL controler. Works fine but PC cannot go to sleep mode now ! Any idea how to solve this point ?
    (Plan B is to detach the HDD from the SIL controler and set up a software RAID1 storage with the windows disk manager)

    • Hi Bernard,

      unfortunately my motherboard is not working anymore and I can’t do any further tests. Based on your feedback it must be a driver issue.

      Regards,
      Luís
